Think granite is boring?

Granite is more than the sheets of rock on your counters.  Granite is a common type of igneous rock.  It’s made from magma that seeps up between other rock layers.  It takes millions of years for granite to form, and in turn, granite is a very durable material.

The strength and durability of granite has made the rock desirable in many regards.

Did you know?

  • Mt. Rushmore is made of granite.
  • The stones used in the sport curling are made of granite.
  • There is a city called Aberdeen in Scotland nicknamed the Granite City.  Most of the buildings there were made from granite.

In all of these instances, granite was used because of its resistance to weather, scratches, heat, and pressure.  It’s the first choice when it comes down to construction, sculpture, and home decorating projects like kitchen countertops.
